6 Organization Strategies for Your Home Office

A Well-Organized University City Home OfficeRegardless of how you use your University City home office, it is difficult to get things done if the area is messy and cluttered. But office organization can be challenging especially when your other tasks also demand so much of your time. Getting and staying organized is a way to reclaim your office space. Here are some organizational strategies recommended by experts that could help you. It’s possible to have an organizational system that helps you be more productive in just a few hours throughout your workweek.

Set Up a System

Before clearing off your desk, or even your computer, you’ll need to have a place to put everything. That is why creating an organizational system is an important first step. If you often work with a lot of paper, that system should include things like an inbox, a file rack for open projects, file storage for completed work, a recycling bin, and so on. On your computer, you can set up a way to organize files and documents, whether by date, alphabetically, or chronologically.

Invest in Storage

It is inevitable that you will still be keeping some important documents and papers in your office even if your work is mostly online. This is why you should invest in quality storage for your home office. A filing cabinet and some shelving are must-haves for any office. Maximize your office’s vertical space for additional storage. Tall shelves give you more storage without crowding your desk area.

Go Digital

If you want to minimize paper in your office, you can scan things into digital files instead. There are many software programs that let you easily convert printed documents, invoices, bills, and others into digital files. You also need to invest in a good quality scanner or all-in-one machine (printer, scanner, fax) and a shredder to destroy any documents you don’t plan to keep.

Clear Away Clutter

One of the fastest ways to feel more organized in a hurry is to clear the clutter off your desk or other areas of your office. Make it a habit to not put anything unrelated to your current project on your desk. This includes any office equipment. Try creating a neatly organized area next to your desk and move items you don’t need easy access to into a different room or store it in a cabinet or boxes. The more organized your office is, the easier it will be to focus on your work.

Re-think Your To-Do List

Another challenging matter for home offices is keeping track of schedules and deadlines. It is helpful to choose a system that will help you keep track of things you need to remember and do. This system could be as simple as a desktop planner. If you want to go high-tech, there are also available apps on your computer or smartphone. The important thing is to choose a format for your daily to-do list that will work for you.

Make Time for Organization

When you are done organizing your home office, the next challenge is how to maintain that level of organization from day today. An effective way to automate your organization is to schedule time for it every week. Schedule it on your calendar, just like you would any other meeting. And then use that time to shred old papers, go through your inbox, or put away clutter. Doing this will help maintain your home office and keep it ready for a productive work week.
